Nestled in the Los Padres National Forest, Wheeler Gorge is a favorite destination for Ventura County families and hikers, but the four stream crossings providing access to campsites created a complete barrier to fish passage to the endangered steelhead trout and also created safety hazards for visitors.
The project will replace four degraded stream crossings with fish-friendly bridges, restoring natural stream function and reconnecting more than 13 miles of habitat across North Fork Matilija, Cannon, and Bear Creeks. In addition to improving public safety, the project will enhance conditions for steelhead, California red-legged frogs, pond turtles, riparian birds, and other species that depend on connected waterways. Campers will also benefit from safer stream crossings, and improved campsites once construction is complete.
Our team at Catalyst was honored to play a key role in supporting South Coast Habitat Restoration and Los Padres National Forest, procuring the necessary state and federal permits and approvals to implement the project. From surveying for sensitive habitats, wildlife, and cultural resources, to maintaining close coordination with the resource agencies, Catalyst was able to support the project through its critical permitting and compliance path as well as support the Forest Service’s approvals and decision-making.
